HISTORY OF HENDERSON BLVD FAMILY

In the beginning, our family in Christ met in a house located on North Howard Avenue. Our family began meeting in 1928 with approximately 15 members. When we moved to the Henderson Blvd location, we had grown to 200 members.

The building at 215 North Howard Avenue had undergone four additions, and growth called for a fifth, so the decision was made to relocate and build a new meeting place.

At that time, in 1955/56, Howard Avenue Church of Christ was guided by two shepherds: Fred S. Dudney and C. Ed Owings. There were seven deacons. Some of the men who served as preachers were A.B. Sheppard, Jack Frost, Bond Stocks and Jim Sellers.

Since January 1957 we have had many preachers fill the pulpit at Henderson Blvd. Some of them were Pat Hardeman, James Walker, W.C. Scott, Everett Mann, Jack Hobby, Ken Clark, James Denison, Harry Pickup, Sr., Frank Andrews, Jeff Harward, Andy DeKlerk, Al Vaughn and Paul Sheehan. Presently Ron Drumm and Ralph Walker, Jr. are the preachers.

Through the years our family has sometimes had elders, and at other times has not. In 1957 Fred S. Dudney, Scott Greenfield and Gilbert E. Thayer served as shepherds. Presently, Ron Drumm, Merle Need, Ralph Walker, Jr., and Ralph Walker, Sr., serve as elders. At this time we have two deacons serving our family. They are George Brown and Jim Paschall.

Today, our family is still thriving and growing in Christ. Our attendance averages 150 on Sunday morning. We not only serve our community in the preaching of the Gospel, but we help in the support of eleven evangelists throughout the world. We send men from our family to Honduras every year, and we have sent men to preach the word in the Philippines.

Our family has Bible classes for all ages on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. To spread the good news of Christ in our community, we have two Gospel meetings a year, and a Summer Series of lessons every Wednesday night beginning the middle of May and running to the middle of August. We also reach out to our community and the world through a web site that offers Bible reading, Bible articles, and audio sermons.

The history of our family is a wonderful blessing. We know the true power, life, and hope of our family lies in the present dedication of service we have in the grace of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! You are welcome to come and serve the Lord of glory with us as we march forward under the banner of love.
